Unbroken is a Co-Op Survival philosophy of living and walking the caregiver path. In our Unbroken retreats, we bring veteran caregivers together for five days of empowerment.  Our goal is to remind each caregiver that we are more than a caregiver; we are still the person we were when our veteran became wounded, ill, or injured.

As caregivers, from the moment our Veteran becomes wounded, ill, or injured, we turn our focus from ourselves to another. We are reborn into a life that is in service to someone else, and, consequently, our story, our desires, our goals fit into what is best for our Veteran.

Touch, taste, smell, joy, heartache, and all those things that ground a person into their own story are pushed aside.

The story that we tell ourselves changes; it shrinks to fit into the demands of the new role.

In our retreat, we slow down, we relearn how to connect our bodies to what is right in front of us.

Past Retreats & Training

Unbroken Facilitator Training for Alumni Caregivers

Sponsored by: Triwest Healthcare Alliance,
Paul’s Ace Hardware, City of Scottsdale, and private donations
Thursday, 10/17/2024 – Monday, 10/21/2024

In this training, caregivers learned to lead and facilitate future Unbroken retreats; specifically broadening communication skills for our retreats and the Veteran-caregiver community at-large.

Unbroken-facilitator training consists of one day with Dr. Diane Millis in Scottsdale, Arizona and 3 days of mock-retreat sessions in northern Arizona.  During our time with Diane, caregivers study the theory behind Dr. Millis’ communication style, develop strategies that encourage self-reflection, gather insights on encouraging story building, and develop a syllabus that keeps us on track.  Dr. Millis facilitated our first Unbroken retreat and could continue to facilitate future retreats, but it is her goal, and ours, that our caregivers learn to lead.  Diane is at the heart of our facilitator-training project and is committed to mentoring our Veteran caregivers.
