Retreat Attendees
Veteran caregiving is a response to the wound, illness, or injury of a service member, and it is with gratitude and respect for the choice to care for that service member that we see each attendee at our Unbroken Caregiver retreat.
Why Unbroken
Caregivers are overburdened but not broken, they are highly capable, generous, and intelligent; the structure that supports the team — family, medical, and mental health.
Often, caregiving is unrecognized and unpaid, with the average workday lasting 9.6 hours, 6.6 days/week. No one should function at 100% for years on end.
Unbroken retreats bring veteran caregivers together for rest, rejuvenation, connection, and an opportunity to reclaim and share their story.

Uncommon ground
The day before wounds, illnesses or injuries, family caregivers had lives full of children, careers, hobbies, and personal interests. Their social identity was a function of individual choices, age, gender, family connections, career paths, academic success, and financial status.
The day after wounds, illnesses or injuries, everything changes. While life moves forward, caregiving becomes the dominant social identity, if not by choice, by necessity.
We enter the caregiver community with little in common, and build common ground with every shared story.

Regrounding
During our Unbroken retreats, we reground ourselves in touch, taste, smell, joy, heartache, and all things that help us remember and revive our story.

Relational homes
We find our “relational home,” a place where individuals share commonality in trauma and are willing to talk or listen to each other. In a relational home there is no need to explain how, why, what, or who, because that is understood.

We slow down, we make space in our heart to listen deeply, and we answer the question, “What do you want?“
